Welcome to the Voice & Choral Studies Department of Berkeley Center for the Arts!

Our department is a community of artists. Together, we explore the world of solo vocal and choral music through performance, technical study, and musicianship skill-building.

Emphasis will be placed on the development of the voice through the four basic principles of singing (respiration, phonation, resonance, and articulation) through legitimate, classical solo singing of standard vocal repertoire for the voice. Studies will include English, Italian, German, French, Spanish, and Latin language diction. Performance etiquette and study in career choices will also be included. Students will also study musical theater selections and participate in small ensembles.

Freshmen in BCA Voice have daily group classes which emphasize healthy vocal development, sight-reading, music theory and history, and English and Italian diction. Our sophomore, junior, and senior voice majors take a weekly private lesson during the school-day class time of their assigned choral ensemble. Juniors prepare for a half-recital (25 minutes), and Seniors prepare for their full recital: representing all major periods of music in English, Latin, German, Spanish, French, and Italian.

At the conclusion of their BCA Voice coursework, students will be at an unparalleled level of preparedness for collegiate music study. BCA Voice alumni have received music scholarships to numerous institutions, whether in pursuit of a music major or not. A list of recent student acceptances can be found below:
